Your
Guide Judith E. Harper
Judith Harper created
Adirondack Safaris as a means of sharing her passion for the
Adirondack
wilderness with people of all ages. To spend a day with her on the trail is to
have one’s senses awakened to the plants, animals, geology, and history of
this extraordinary region. From the time she was a young child living in eastern
Massachusetts, Judith has been roaming wild places searching to satisfy her
curiosity about birds and waterfowl; wildflowers, trees, and other plants; as
well as butterflies, dragonflies, amphibians, and reptiles.
As a hiker with a lifetime
of trail experience, Judith is a New York State Licensed Guide (#4839) and is
Red Cross-certified to administer CPR and wilderness first aid.
With a master’s degree in
education and ten years’ teaching experience, Judith is skilled at providing
fun and lively nature experiences that are designed to meet the interests and
abilities of children, teens, and adults of all ages.
A day doesn’t go by that
Judith isn’t out exploring—discovering new trails for her clients and
studying the natural world. Although driving rainstorms and blizzards have been
known to keep her inside, she ventures forth in all other kinds of weather. In
winter, she’s trekking on snowshoes and cross-country skis when the snow is
deep, and when it’s not, she’s hiking with her Yaktrax.
Judith has been a writer of
history for many years. Her most recent book, Women during the Civil War (Routledge 2004), was a project five
years in the making. It was selected as an “Outstanding Academic Title of
2004” by Choice magazine.
When Judith isn’t hiking
or writing, she’s relaxing at home with her husband and her golden retriever,
Sophie.
